Questions we get all the time — and answers that save everyone time. This is the part where we explain things that are easier to explain once. Honestly, we do like questions. We just like the fewer repetitions of the same ones. Read like a legend.

Logistics & Location

Where the hell are we?

In Baške Oštarije — a small mountain village on the Velebit range.

We’re located exactly halfway between Karlobag (the sea) and Gospić (inland): about 20 km / 20 minutes from either side.

You’ll find us right next to the main road. No detours, no hidden turns, no mysteries.

How to get here?

By car, bike, hitchhiking — or public transport.

Please don’t try to walk. We’re serious. We’ve seen it happen.

Kamp Velebit is located directly on a main state road and is easily accessible by:

  • car (including large campers)

  • bicycle

  • hitchhiking

Walking up here is a bad idea: the road is steep, has no sidewalk, and offers full sun exposure. It’s uncomfortable at best and unsafe at worst.

Breaking news (2025):

LikaLine public transportation now operates across the Lika region. Check their schedule online — we’re located in Baške Oštarije.

If you’re hiking Premužić Trail, Via Adriatica, or Via Dinarica, we’re directly on your route and easy to reach.

We regularly run errands to Gospić, so catching a ride with us is sometimes possible — just ask.

📞 +385 91 660 8253

Is there a phone signal?

Yes.

Mostly 4G, and occasionally whatever your phone decides to call “service.”

Baške Oštarije is still a good place to use your phone without it using you.

Signal is generally available in the village and around the camp.

Once you start hiking, coverage changes quickly — sometimes within a few steps.

Plan accordingly.

Is there a gas station nearby?

Yes — in both directions.

There is a gas station in Gospić and one in Karlobag, each about 20 minutes away by car.

There is also an electric charging station in Gospić.

If you arrive from the coast, fuel up in Karlobag.

If you arrive from inland, Gospić is your last easy stop.

Are there hiking trails around?

Yes. That’s kind of the point.

There are around 40 km of marked hiking and biking trails starting directly from the camp and spreading across the surrounding Velebit area.

Please be responsible:

  • know your route

  • check the weather

  • carry water

  • turn back in time

The Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) is excellent — and best appreciated from a distance.

We’ve had to call them before for guests who didn’t plan properly.

What’s the temperature and weather like on the top of Velebit?

Kamp Velebit sits in the mountains, and the weather here behaves like real mountains, not a beach resort — even in summer. Temperatures change with elevation, exposure, wind, and clouds, and that can make a huge difference in how it feels.

Here’s a rough idea of what to expect during the main season (April–October):

  • April – daytime highs around ~16 °C, nights ~7 °C — spring-fresh, breezy, often cool in the shade.

  • May – warming up, daytime often mid-teens to low 20s, nights still cool.

  • June – mild to warm, days often low- to mid-20s, nights ~11 °C.

  • July – warmest month, daytime ~27 °C, nights ~13 °C.

  • August – similar to July, with low-teen nights and warm days.

  • September – pleasant high teens to low 20s, cool nights ~9–14 °C.

  • October – cooler, days ~10–17 °C and nights down to ~5–9 °C.

During summer months, daily highs commonly reach 25–28 °C, but nights stay cool — often well below 15 °C even in July and August.

Mountain weather can shift quickly, especially with cloud, wind, or shade.

So while the average suggests mild warmth, conditions often feel much cooler — especially early morning, late afternoon, or on cloudy/windy days.

Important: It can get cold here even in summer, especially when it’s cloudy or windy — layers are better than a single jacket. As the Norwegians say:

“Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær!” (There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes!)

Are there any shops nearby for basic supplies?

The nearest shops are located in Gospic and Karlobag – both are 20min ride away. Most of our guests combine shopping with their daily trips to beaches in Karlobag. In Gospic you can find large supermarkets such as Lidl, Plodine and Konzum. However, there is a dairy shop 1km away from us with milk, yogurt and different sorts of cheese made by local cows. Be sure to taste ‘Basa’ (a cheese spread), Lički Škripavac (Lika’s Squizzing Cheese named because it creates squeezing sound when you chew it) and their famous Stracciatella Yogurt! They are all delicious. UPDATE: the dairy shop has been burned and it will hopefully be renovated this summer.

All Things Camping

Do I need a reservation?

Usually, no.

Outside of July and August, reservations are generally not required.

The camp operates on a simple arrival-based system, and guests can usually self check in when they arrive.

A reservation is required if:

  • you’re arriving in July or August

  • you’re coming as a larger group

  • you have special requirements

If you’re unsure, a short message in advance is always appreciated.

The system is intentionally simple — arrive, settle in, respect the shared space, and enjoy.

How late can we arrive?

Standard check-in is until 21:00 (9 p.m.).

Later arrivals can be arranged, including very late or night arrivals — as long as you let us know in advance and arrive quietly.

If you arrive late:

  • set up without unnecessary noise

  • avoid lights pointing into tents

  • save socializing for the next day

Quiet arrivals = happy campers.

Quiet arrivals also = non-angry Luka.

Can we stay longer on checkout day?

Yes — and this is one of the things we’re genuinely known for.

If you’re leaving or going exploring on your checkout day, we ask just one thing:

  • Please complete checkout and payment in the morning.

After that, you’re free to:

  • Go hiking all day

  • Come back later

  • Take a shower

  • Cook lunch

  • Use all camp facilities

  • Pack up slowly and leave whenever it suits you

No rushing. No extra charges.

This kind of flexibility is not common in most camps, but here it’s part of how we do things.

Settle first → enjoy full freedom later.

Can I reserve a specific spot / pitch?

No — and that’s very much on purpose.

Kamp Velebit uses an open, anarchic, non-zoned camping system.

There are no numbered pitches, no premium spots, and no “this costs extra” areas.

You arrive, you look around, and you choose your own place.

A few unwritten rules that somehow need to be written:

  • If the camp is mostly empty, don’t park right next to the only other guest

  • Space is free — please use it

  • Early arrivals get first choice, and we don’t charge extra for better spots

Many guests describe this as:

“Wild camping — but legal, calm, and with hot showers.”

That’s exactly the idea.

If you need a precisely assigned square, measured distances, or guaranteed neighbors — this probably isn’t the right system.

If you enjoy freedom, space, and common sense — it works beautifully.

Pro tip: if you don’t find your ideal spot on day one you can move the next day.

Do you have trees / pitches with shade?

Yes — shade is available, but it depends on where you settle in.

The camp naturally divides into two areas:

  • Heavily shaded zone

Lots of trees, plenty of shade.

Best suited for tents, cars, and smaller vans.

  • More open zone

Designed for larger campers and motorhomes.

Offers partial shade — enough for breaks, but not full forest cover.

Because we use an open camping system, specific shaded spots can’t be reserved.

However, the camp has daily movement — people arrive, leave, and change plans all the time.

If you don’t find your ideal spot on day one:

  • you can move the next day

  • better shade often opens up

  • nobody will call the camping police

Outside peak season, you’re very likely to find shade — especially if you arrive earlier in the day.

Think of it as:

Choose a spot. Live with it. Improve it tomorrow.

Shade exists. You just have to look around before claiming your kingdom.

Pro tip: arriving early increases both shade and happiness.

Do you have electricity at the pitches?

Yes. Electricity is available at the camp.

Charging small personal devices — phones, laptops, cameras, power banks, e-bikes — is free of charge.

We only charge extra when electricity use becomes… noticeable:

  • camper vans connected to power

  • vehicle fridges running continuously

  • electric vehicles charging

That keeps things fair for everyone.

You’re camping in the region where Nikola Tesla was born, so electricity feels appropriate.

Just remember: this is still Velebit — not a data center.

Use power wisely and Perun, god of thunder, will remain calm.

Is this camp suitable for children / families?

Yes — families with children are welcome.

That said, Kamp Velebit is not a family resort. Most guests are couples, solo travelers, or families with babies and young toddlers, especially outside the main summer season.

There is:

  • a small playground

  • plenty of space, nature, and room to explore

Children here usually play with the real elements:

earth, water, fire (from a distance), wind, wood — not animations or screens.

Because many guests come for quiet and rest, we ask parents to:

  • keep children under supervision

  • be mindful of noise in shared areas

  • respect quiet hours in the evening

If your children enjoy nature and you’re comfortable setting boundaries, they usually thrive here.

If you’re looking for pools, animation programs, or noise-tolerant environments — this may not be the right place.

And that’s okay.

Can I work remotely / is this suitable for digital cromads?

Yes — remote work is possible here, and it actually works.

We have:

  • Starlink satellite internet (fast and stable)

  • reliable electricity across the camp

  • tables and shared spaces suitable for working

  • a generally quiet atmosphere, especially during the day

Many guests work a few hours in the morning, disappear to hike or swim, and return in the evening when work (and traffic) is done.

Just keep in mind:

  • this is still a camp, not a coworking hub

  • meetings with dramatic hand gestures and speakerphone enthusiasm are best avoided in shared spaces

If you can work calmly and independently, you’ll be fine.

Is this a party camp / festival vibe?

No.

Kamp Velebit is a place for:

  • sleeping well

  • resting between hikes and road trips

  • cooking, talking, and sharing space — quietly

There are no parties, no DJs, no late-night noise, and no festival atmosphere.

If your idea of a good time involves bluetooth speakers, crowds, or going loud after dark — this is probably not your place.

If your idea of a good time is:

  • a campfire

  • a calm conversation

  • a quiet beer or tea under the stars

You’ll likely feel at home.

We don’t host parties. We host nights.

“Everything aligned.”

Tent still crooked.

Amenities & Services

Do you serve any food or drinks at the camp?

Not for now. However, there is a restaurant 1km away from us as a part of the hostel Baske Ostarije. They offer some great local dishes at affordable prices.

Do you have free WiFi on site?

We are proud owners and providers of the Starlink satelite internet service! Before Starlink we were dependant on slow and unreliable connection by landline which costed us many nerves and lost us many customers, especially remote workers. Previously the speed we had was 25 Mbps upload and 1 Mbps download and now thanks to Elon Musk and Starlink we have up to 200 Mbps download and 30 Mpbs upload speed!

Do you have the kitchen available which guests can use?

We have both indoor and outdoor kitchen equipped with cookers and basic utensils, pots, pans etc. You can use our public refrigerators free of charge.

Can I drink water at the campsite?

Our water is perfectly drinkable – it is almost like a spring water because we are first on the supply line.

Do you have refrigerators where we can store our food and drinks?

Yes, there are a couple of refrigerators available for your convenience free of charge.

Is there a laundry service available?

Yes, we have both Wash&Dry service available for 5€ each but you can also hang-dry on your own using fresh mountain air so you pay only 5€ for washing.

What about BBQ and fire, we wanna be firestarters?

Yes of course, we have designated area for camping fire and BBQ. Sometimes we provide wood for burning, sometimes guests pick up wood in surrounding forests but we also have an option to purchase wood for this purpose. Same works for BBQ coal.

Can we empty our chemical or gray water toalet at your camp?

Yes for gray water and no for chemical toalet. Kamp Velebit is proud for its investment in the BIOROCK wastewater treatment system which works by decomposing wastewater through a bacteria. Chemicals from chemical toilets kill these essential bacteria which can undermine the entire system of treatment so only toilets without bacteria may be emptied. We hope to invest in station for emptying chemical toilets but these systems are quite expensive and we are just a small camp. Your best chance for emptying chemical toilets is when you visit some of the larger campsites in Croatia which there are plenty.

“Nature speaks here.”

It doesn’t explain itself.

Camping Etiquette

Is there a lot of noise at the camp?

It all depends on the prevailing and dominant cultural and ethnic background of guests which currently reside at the camp. Balkanians (a.k.a. local species) and species of eastern Europeans including most Mediterraneans are known to be louder than than western Europeans. They often engage in what is known as late night socializing and sometimes they use different instruments and their voices to create music which is boosted by magical drinks such as Travarica, Shlyivovitza, Medica etc. We try to balance things out by enforcing quite hours curfew as a part of our ‘Camping Etiquette’ which begins at 22:00. We also risk our life by doing so on a daily basis. Check this out.

Is smoking allowed?

Yes as long as you don’t puff smoke into other people’s face you may smoke your herbs. However it is forbidden to smoke inside of facilities. And please please please put throw your cigarette buds and roaches into the TRASH and not on the ground. By far the most frequently trash detected around the camp are cigarettes or related to cigarettes (boxes, foils etc.).

Are dogs allowed?

Yes. Dogs are welcome — and free of charge.

A few simple conditions:

  • Keep dogs under control in shared areas

  • Use a leash unless actively playing or training

  • Be mindful that some guests may be afraid of dogs

  • Clean up after your dog and dispose of waste properly

We love dogs.

We also rely on owners to make sure their dogs don’t become everyone else’s responsibility.

“So respectful.”

Nothing interesting happened.
